Editorial Changes for 2001

The number of manuscripts submitted to the Journal continues to rise and is expected to reach nearly 4000 for the year 2000. This has put correspondingly increasing burdens on the editorial structure of the Journal, which was designed several years ago to handle half this number of manuscripts. To deal with this problem, the Council of the Society for Neuroscience has authorized an increase in the number of Reviewing Editors from 12 to 20. We are using these slots to appoint new Reviewing Editors in critical areas of neuroscience that are undergoing particularly strong growth. These include synaptic properties, apoptosis, plasticity, genetic mechanisms, and neural systems, areas that have contributed to the surge of submitted manuscripts. Recent appointments in these specialties include Ann Kelley, Clifford Woolf, and Stuart Cull-Candy. We welcome suggestions from authors and readers for Reviewing Editors to cover other areas.

Similarly, we are increasing the number of Senior Editors. Newly appointed Senior Editors Gail Mandel and Frank White are thoroughly familiar with Journal operations from their former responsibilities as Reviewing Editors. Gail Mandel and Gary Westbrook will work together in the section of Cellular/Molecular neuroscience, while Frank White will share editorial duties with Stephen Lisberger in the section of Behavioral/Systems. Dennis O'Leary will continue to handle manuscripts in the newly expanded section of Development/Plasticity/Repair.

The basic instructions for authors do not change, and authors should continue to submit their manuscripts to the most appropriate Senior Editor and, if they wish, Reviewing Editor. In case of doubt, authors should submit to either of the Senior Editors in the section they prefer. Please consult the Instructions for Authors for appropriate contact information.
