Video Clip 1
Sleep onset REM sleep periods (SOREMP) while feeding. SOREMP episodes are identified by the sudden
loss of muscle tone (collapse of body coupled with a flat EMG) and entry into
REM sleep from purposeful waking behavior. In this video clip two episodes are evident, and in each
episode the rat collapses while feeding.
This recording was made five weeks after the administration of HCRT-SAP
which lesioned the HCRT neurons in the LH. Persistence of the sleepiness and SOREMPs indicate long-term
consequence of the lesion. In this and the other three video clips the
electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) are superimposed on the
behavior, thus allowing the viewer to observe the rat at both the
electrophysiological and behavioral level. Both the EEG and the EMG are required to determine whether the
rat is awake, asleep or in REM sleep.
When the rat is awake the EMG level is high and the EEG is
desynchronized. During sleep, the
EMG level decreases and the EEG is synchronized. When the animal enters into REM sleep the EMG becomes flat,
the EEG is desynchronized as in waking, and at the behavioral level the body is
very relaxed and irregular respiration is evident. To facilitate downloading and viewing, the four videos have
been accelerated. However, a timer
is present in each video and can be used to time the events. To further shorten
the size of the video clip, we have edited out portions of those behavioral
sequences that the rat continues to engage in over an extended period of
time. Therefore, if the rat
continues to eat or groom over a period of several minutes, we have shown only
a few seconds of the behavior and edited out the rest. Similarly, only the entry into and exit
from a SOREMP episode are shown.
