Postpubertal Sex Differentiation of Forebrain Structures and Functions Depend on Transforming Growth Factor-{alpha}
J. Neurosci. Koshibu et al. 25: 3870

Supplemental data

Files in this Data Supplement:

  • supplemental material - Supplementary Fig 1. Comparison of forebrain structural surface areas The raw surface area measurements for male and female, control and |*bital*|Wa-1|*eital*| (a) lateral ventricle, (b) third ventricle, (c) hippocampus, (d) striatum, (e) amygdala, and (f) total brain are presented. The surface areas for amygdala and total brain are increased to the same extent as their respective volumes at 3 mo compared to 1 mo in both males and females. The black bars are control males. The white bars are control females. The grey bars are Wa-1 males. The diagonally patterned bars are Wa-1 females. Statistical significance (mean + SEM; p < 0.05): a = age effect in raw data, b = sex effect in raw data, a* = age effect normalized to the respective brain volume, b* = sex effect normalized to the respective brain volume. The differences between control and Wa-1 are not indicated in this figure but are represented in Supplementary Figure 2.
  • supplemental material - Supplementary Fig 2. Percent surface area changes in |*bital*|Wa-1|*eital*| compared to controls (a) Lateral ventricle, (b) third ventricle, (c) hippocampus, (d) striatum, (e) amygdala, and (f) total brain surface area changes in |*bital*|Wa-1|*eital*| compared to controls are shown for male and female, pubertal and adult mice. The solid bars represent males. The white bars represent females. The lateral (a) and third (b) ventricular surface areas are smaller in pubertal and larger in adult |*bital*|Wa-1|*eital*| adults compared to their respective controls, which parallels the volumetric findings. Possible shape distortions are statistically derived for the lateral ventricle, hippocampus, and striatum and are described in the text. The asterisks indicate statistically significant (P < 0.05) differences between controls and mutants, as determined from raw data. The error bars are not presented here, because these graphs represent percentage change.
