In this scheme PPTg efferents form one of several parallel pathways (including SC) linking primary sensory systems to DA cells. Activity within PPTg is subject to gating by arousal and general attention mechanisms, while PPTg effects on DA cells are gated by separate inputs bearing reward-related information.
