Model for 5-HT regulation of egg laying behavior. Stimulation of egg laying behavior occurs predominantly via the 5-HT-dependent GPCR, SER-1, in the vulval muscle. An inhibitory response to 5-HT is unmasked in ser-1 mutant animals, and this inhibition is mediated by MOD-1, a %-HT-dependent chloride channel, MOD-1 probably functions in a neuron upstream to inhibit HSN function, which in turn inhibits egg laying. After chronic treatment with exogenous 5-HT, both pathways adapt, resulting in egg-laying rates similar to those of untreated animals
