Supplemental Figure S1. Proposed role for locally synthesized β-thymosin in neurite outgrowth. A, In the absence of inhibitory constraints, β-thymosin mRNA is translationally suppressed. As a consequence, free actin concentrations and actin polymerization rates are relatively high, and growth cones advance in an unrestricted manner. B, In a growth inhibitory environment, translation of β-thymosin mRNA is induced. Locally synthesized β-thymosin reduces the concentration of free actin in the growth cone. As a consequence, actin polymerization rates inside the filopodia are relatively low and neurite outgrowth is inhibited.
