Increasing Access and Speeding Production
With this issue, the Journal rolls back our access control policy from 12 months to 6 months for research papers. Although members of the Society for Neuroscience have always been able to access the online Journal as a benefit of their membership, the new policy allows more immediate access for others in the scientific community and the public. We will continue to provide immediate open access for any articles that the editors think have immediate relevance to clinical care.
Free and open access includes all back issues of the Journal (19812005). The move toward more open access is consistent with the Journal's general goals of providing peer review of manuscripts, an editorial board of working scientists, and rapid, professional publication of papers that cover the broad range of neuroscience. Although 6-month Open Access has no immediate cost to authors, members or readers, we will be considering options to support the Journal if there are changes in institutional subscriptions. Overall, we view the Open Access discussion as an opportunity to provide even greater service to authors and readers.
Authors will also be glad to know that we have further optimized our already rapid production process to meet a 4-week production schedule for papers accepted after February 15, 2006. This means that you should expect your paper to appear in a published issue within 1 month of acceptance.
If you send us your papers, you can expect that they will be handled fairly and expeditiously and that readers will have rapid access to your work.
