Supplemental Figure 1. Behavioral task and recording site. a, After a start-cue appeared, the monkeys pressed a bar, which changed the start-cue to a small fixation point. The presentation of the fixation point for 700 ms was followed by that of a sample for 630 ms. Then, three test items were added to the area surrounding the sample and the monkeys touched the test item that matched the sample, by color or by shape, within 2500 ms. A drop of juice was administered 800 ms after a correct selection. An error-signal was presented 700 ms after an incorrect selection for 500 ms. The ITI was 2400 ms. The eye fixation was required during the fixation point and sample presentation periods. b, Site of recordings (gray shading).
