Supplemental Figure Coronal section of the forebrain immunolabelled with antibodies directed against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and parvalbumin. Double-immunolabeling for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH, stained in brown with DAB alone) and for parvalbumin (stained in black with DAB amplified by nickel) was used as a control both for the effectiveness of the 6-OHDA lesion and for the density of parvalbumin positive neurons in the denervated striatum. Note the complete disappearance of TH-positive fibers in the striatum ipsilateral to 6-OHDA injection, and the increasing density gradient of parvalbumin-positive cell bodies from medial to lateral parts of both striatum. Dopaminergic depletion did not affect the number of parvalbumin cells.
