Ventral Neural Progenitors Switch toward an Oligodendroglial Fate in Response to Increased Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) Activity: Involvement of Sulfatase 1 in Modulating Shh Signaling in the Ventral Spinal Cord
J. Neurosci. Danesin et al. 26: 5037

Supplemental data

Files in this Data Supplement:

  • supplemental material - Supplemental figure: Model for the regulation of the ventral N/OL switch by a temporal change in Shh activity. (A-B) During early neural development (E1.5-E5) ventral neural progenitors of the pMN and p3 domains, generate MNs and V3 interneurons, respectively (A), in response to graded Shh activity decreasing dorsally (B). (C-D) From E5, when ventral neural progenitors have gained the expression of Sulf1, the Nkx2.2 domain of expression starts to extend dorsally thereby creating the p* domain. Neural progenitors of the p3 and p* domains then switch towards an oligodendroglial fate (C). This temporal change in the fate of ventral neural progenitors depends on a sudden change in Shh distribution at their surface regulated by Sulf1 activity on HSPGs, leading to a local increase of the magnitude of the morphogen signalling (D).
