Supplementary Figure 1. The laminar arrangement of cortical interneurons is perturbed in the absence of Reelin signaling. Coronal sections through the somatosensory cortex of P14 wild type (A-D), Dab1-/- (E-H), and reeler (I-L) mice after immunohistochemistry for Parvalbumin (A,E,I), Calbindin (B,F,J), Calretinin (C,G,K) and Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) (D,H,L). Parvalbumin+ interneurons are present in all cortical layers in wild type (A) and mutant mice (E,I), but the lamination of the immunoreactive neuropile is disrupted in the mutants. Calbindin+ cells and processes are scattered in the full width of the cortex in both Dab1 and reeler mutants (F,J), as opposed to wild type mice in which they are largely restricted to layers II-III (B). The majority of Calretinin+ interneurons occupy layers II-III in the wild type cortex (C), whereas they are also frequently found in intermediate and deep layers of the mutant cortex (arrowheads) (G,K). NOS+ interneurons are abundant in deep cortical layers and mostly absent in superficial layers in wild type mice (D), but these cells are frequently found in superficial positions in Dab1 and reeler mutants (arrowheads) (H,L).
