Supplemental Figure. Simplified schematic of brain pathways and structures involved in relaying sensory information to the PVN. Maternal sensory input provides an overall inhibitory tone to the pups’ stress response (for review, see Sanchez et al., 2001). The increased maternal input after the return of handled pups to the dam reaches the central amygdala nucleus (ACe) and thalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVT) via sensory inputs from spinal cord and brainstem nuclei. ACe and PVT relay stress information to PVN via polysynaptic connections involving the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BnST). Solid line = monosynaptic connections; dashed line = polysynaptic connections; AMe = medial amygdala nucleus; BLA = basolateral amygdala nucleus; PVN = hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus.
