Supplemental Figure 3. Responses of the aPC neurons to natural food or an artificial mixture of odorants that mimic natural food odor
(A) This shows neurons that showed excitatory or inhibitory responses to the panel A of the food odor. Individual neurons are numbered and shown in each column. The food odors are shown in each row. The natural food odors are indicated by gray background. The responses to each odor were examined one to 8 times. The significance of each response was checked by the Mann-Whitney U-test (P<0.05). The excitatory responses were classified into a strong response (large filled circle), a modest response (middle-size filled circle) and a weak response (small filled circle) (See the Materials and Methods). The inhibitory responses are indicated by a triangle. No response is indicated by a bar. Odors that were not examined are indicated by blank. (B) This shows neurons that responded to the panel B of the food odor. The panel B includes artificial food odor and essential oils (light gray). The responses are indicated in the same manner as in A. Among the 132 neurons examined in the area in the aPC, 76 (58%) neurons showed responses to at least one food odor.
