CORRECTION
In the article "Psychomotor Stimulant
Addiction: A Neural Systems Perspective," by Barry J. Everitt and
Marina E. Wolf, which appeared on pages 3312-3320 of the May 1, 2002 issue, the first full paragraph on page 3316 gives the erroneous
impression that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) does not project to the
ventral tegmental area (VTA). However, the point being made was that
PFC projections to the VTA do not synapse directly on those VTA
dopamine neurons projecting to the nucleus accumbens (mesoaccumbens
dopamine neurons), although they do synapse on VTA GABA neurons
projecting to the nucleus accumbens and on VTA dopamine neurons
projecting to the PFC. Thus, the route of communication between the PFC
and mesoaccumbens dopamine neurons must be indirect.
