EDITORIAL
A New Year for the Journal

ARTICLE

This issue initiates the first of a number of changes to the Journal of Neuroscience for 2003. Gordon Shepherd will be stepping down as Editor-In-Chief. By all measures such as submissions, impact, and readership, the Journal continued to improve during his term. We thank him for his efforts on behalf of the Journal . The former Behavioral/Systems neuroscience section now specifically encompasses Cognitive, because our ongoing intent is to cover the full spectrum of neuroscience. On the editorial side, Barry Connors becomes a Senior Editor in the interface between the Cellular/Molecular and Behavioral/Systems/Cognitive sections. John Huguenard, Toni Shippenberg, and Randy Buckner join as Reviewing Editors.

The format of the Journal in both the print version and on-line edition has been redesigned, indicative of the many changes that are on the horizon in format and content. For example, we hope that you will find the new on-line search features of value. We will also introduce a number of new features in the Journal to enhance its value to our readers. In addition, we realize that many readers quickly jump to those articles in their specific subdiscipline. While this is natural, we would like to entice readers to browse beyond their home section. Thus we plan to highlight one article from each section on the cover and on the This Week in the Journal page. These comments will be a brief, narrative summary, with the hope that you will be interested enough to go to the article and read in more depth. This page is intended to highlight the breadth and diversity of neuroscience, so expect to see a variety of topics and approaches in coming issues. We will be adding other features during the year, including commentaries and specialized review articles. Suggestions for topics are welcome.

Happy New Year from the editors and journal staff.

Gary Westbrook
Editor-in-Chief
