We have studied in the past (J Comp Neurol 153:291-307, 1974) the interaction of postmitotic granule neuron precursors and Purkinje neurons in organotypic cultures of newborn rat cerebellum (time-lapse and electron microscopy) and concluded that synaptogenesis occured by a trial-and-error mechanism. This is compatible with what is reported in this study of migrating neuroblasts from the SVZ.
