Cover picture: Layout of functional domains in cat
primary visual cortex determined with optical imaging. The
dark and light regions correspond to ocular
dominance columns of the contralateral and ipsilateral eye,
respectively. The colored lines are iso-orientation lines
that were derived from an orientation preference map from the same
cortical region. All cortical points along a line of a given color
respond best to the same orientation of a visual stimulus. It can be
seen that the ocular dominance and orientation preference maps are
geometrically related; many pinwheel centers (points at which
lines of all colors converge) are centered on
ocular dominance columns, and iso-orientation lines often cross the
borders between adjacent ocular dominance columns at right angles. For
details, see the article by Hübener et al., in this issue (pp.
9270-9284).
