About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Composite figure showing a cortex-striatum-substantia nigra organotypic culture grown for 30 d in vitro. The culture was stained for tyrosine hydroxylase, and reconstructed morphologies of individual neuronal classes (Neurobiotin) are superimposed. Dopamine neurons (white) from the substantia nigra densely innervate the striatum. This nigrostriatal pathway converges with the corticostriatal pathway at the level of the striatal culture. Corticostriatal projection neurons (blue, dendrite; yellow, axon) innervate wide areas of the cortex and the striatum, respectively. In this in vitro system, the population of corticostriatal projection neurons induces "up" states in medium spiny neurons (red) and strong discharge in nearby fast-spiking interneurons (yellow). For details, see the article by Plenz and Kitai, in this issue (pages 266-283).
