Cover picture: Thalamocortical projections in a reeler mouse at embryonic day 18 revealed with three-dimensional confocal microscopic reconstruction. A DiI crystal was placed in the dorsal thalamus, which labeled thalmic fibers (yellow-green) in the dorsolateral segment of the occipital cortex (yellow). The section was counterstained with acridine orange to reveal the nuclei of cortical cells (orange). In reeler, thalamic axons occupy oblique fascicles through the cortical plate and end in the "superplate" (which contained displaced preplate cells) compartment where they defasciculate to form a "canopy" of fine terminals. For details, see the article by Molnár et al., in this issue (pages 5746-5765).
