Cover picture: Simultaneous patch clamping and calcium imaging in the organ of Corti of the guinea pig cochlea. Selected images are from a sequence of 600 frames acquired at the rate of 66 frames/sec using a high-performance fluorescence imaging system. One hair cell was stimulated by a brief puff of ATP applied to the hair bundle, resulting in a two-component increase in intracellular calcium. The first response maximum, attributable to influx through the stereocilia, is at 259 msec. The second response maximum, attributable to release from an intracellular store, is at 2.12 sec. For details, see the article by Mammano et al., in this issue (pages 6918-6929).
