Cover picture: Presynaptic (in red) and
postsynaptic (in blue) cells and fibers in the cochlear
nucleus of the chick, the site of giant end bulb synaptic terminals of
auditory nerve fibers. These synapses are apparent surrounding each
spherical cell body. The electrophysiological traces show orthodromic
responses of a postsynaptic cell in both current- and voltage-clamp
conditions, illustrating that synaptic depression does not completely
eliminate functional transmission. An important factor in minimizing
depression is the high efficiency of glutamate transporters, which act
during the trains of stimuli to remove glutamate and prevent
desensitization of receptors. The music underlying the image is from
Schumann's "Traumerei (Reveries)." For details, see the article by
Ture
ek and Trussell, in this issue (pages 2054-2063).
