Cover picture: Topographic map of uncaged glutamate-induced activity of an intrinsically bursting cell in layer V of the rat barrel cortex with correlated sample traces. The photomicrograph of the native coronal slice was superimposed on the respective Neurolucida reconstruction of the somatodendritic domains of the cell and the map illustrating the type of induced activity. The size of the investigated area is indicated by the black frame. The color of each stimulated field indicates the type and the amplitude of correlated activity in the recorded cell. Responses consist of action potentials (red), inhibitory synaptic inputs (blue), and excitatory synaptic inputs of variable amplitudes (green to orange). Fields that elicit a response because of direct dendritic activation of the recorded cell are marked in gray. Stimulated fields without any correlated activity are transparent. For details, see the article by Schubert et al. in this issue (pages 3580-3592).
