About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: In the foreground is a colorized Golgi impregnation of a mature cerebellar Purkinje cell in a rocker (rkr/rkr) mouse. Rocker is a new allele of the calcium channel alpha 1a subunit. Purkinje cells in older rocker mutants show a decrease in branching and have downturned distal ends of their dendritic tree. In the four panels of the background, immunostaining for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in the cerebellum of rkr/rkr adult animals indicates that TH expression in Purkinje cells of posterior lobules is a transient phenomenon that persists in all Cacnala mutants described to date (added background panels). In rocker however, the normal regression pattern is observed (top panels). The bottom panel shows the proposed transmembrane topography of the calcium channel alpha -1a subunit and positions of the mouse mutants, tottering (tg), rolling (rol), leaner (la), and rocker (rkr). For details, see the article by Zwingman et al. in this issue (pages 1169-1178).
