About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Purkinje cell degeneration in spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) transgenic mice. Cerebellar sections from 13-week-old SCA7 transgenic mice were immunostained with antibodies directed against ataxin-7 (magenta) and calbindin (green), and with DAPI (blue). Granule cell neurons and neurons in the molecular layer show intense punctate staining corresponding to nuclear aggregates of ataxin-7 protein containing an expanded 92-glutamine tract. Although calbindin staining reveals a dramatic loss of Purkinje cell dendritic arborization, polyglutamine-expanded ataxin-7 protein is not expressed in Purkinje cells, as evidenced by the absence of ataxin-7 antibody staining. For details, see the article by Garden et al. in this issue (pages 4897-4905).
