About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover picture: Color filters in the Papilio eye. An isolated compound eye was illuminated from the proximal side (i.e., from the cut surface), and the transmitted light leaving the eye at the corneal side was photographed. Each ommatidium appears either yellow or (more or less saturated) red, corresponding to the colors of pigment lining the rhabdom. The ommatidia with a less-saturated red color fluoresce under UV epi-illumination. For details, see the article by Arikawa et al. in this issue 4527-4532
