An isolated compound eye was illuminated from the proximal side (i.e., from the cut surface), and the transmitted light leaving the eye at the corneal side was photographed. Each ommatidium appears either yellow or (more or less saturated) red, corresponding to the colors of pigment lining the rhabdom.
