Cover picture: A brief deflection of the D2 whisker on the rat snout evokes a dynamic sensory response in layer 2/3 of primary somatosensory barrel cortex. The evoked membrane potential changes of individual neurons recorded in the whole-cell patch-clamp configuration can be observed in the context of the ensemble response imaged at high spatial and temporal resolution in vivo with voltage-sensitive dye. The figure shows an early time point in the sensory response 15 msec after whisker deflection. At this time, the excitatory response (yellow on this color scale, with no change in a red color) is limited to a region near the D2 barrel column. The position of the layer 4 barrels identified with a cytochrome oxidase stain defines the anatomical map and is outlined in cyan. The two layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons were recorded simultaneously with the whole-cell technique during the imaging; after the experiment, their morphology was reconstructed three dimensionally. The neuron with dendrites colored blue was located in the D2 barrel, whereas the neuron with black dendrites was located at the far edge of the D3 barrel. For details, see the article by Petersen et al. in this issue (pages 1298-1309).
