This multielectrode array, manufactured by Gary Lehew at the laboratory of Miguel Nicolelis, was used in the study of neuronal tuning to velocity during the operation of a brain-machine interface. The color plots show patterns of velocity tuning. Each plot represents velocity in polar coordinates (center, zero velocity; for off-center points, the radius drawn from the center is proportional to velocity magnitude, and its direction defines velocity direction). Color coding represents the neuronal firing rate (red, high; blue, low) for each
