Cover picture: A male small white butterfly, Pieris rapae crucivora, feeding on a flower. The article by
Arikawa et al. in this issue (pages 5935-5942)
reports marked sexual dimorphism in the spectral sensitivity
of photoreceptors that express violet-absorbing visual
pigment. In females these photoreceptor cells are
violet sensitive, but in males they are double-peaked
blue receptors. The difference is attributed to the
filtering effect of violet-absorbing fluorescing
pigment found only in males.
