  • ChAT activity was measured in homogenates from bilateral dissections by incorporation of [14C]acetyl CoA into [14C]acetylcholine. Means of the combined bilateral dissections (nanomoles of ACh per hour per milligram of protein) ± SEM are shown, and percentages, given in parentheses, are based on the comparison with the PBS/CytC only. Treatment effects were obtained by comparing corresponding groups only (PBS/CytC vs PBS/NGF, low-192Sap/CytC vs low-192Sap/NGF and high-192Sap/CytC vs high-192Sap/NGF). Lesion effects were determined by comparing PBS/CytC with either low-192Sap/CytC or high-192Sap/CytC. Frontal cortex: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group, p < 0.0001 and 0.0005; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC p < 0.005 and 0.0001. Parietal cortex: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group,p < 0.05; ***p = 0.065; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC, p < 0.0001. Occipital cortex: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group, p < 0.0001; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC, p < 0.0001. Cingulate cortex: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group, p < 0.001; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC, p < 0.0001. Hippocampus: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group, p < 0.05; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC, p < 0.0005 and 0.0001. Olfactory bulbs: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group, p < 0.005 and 0.05; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC, p < 0.005 and 0.0001. Across all regions: *NGF effect, corresponding CytC group,p < 0.0001 and 0.05; **192Sap effect, PBS/CytC,p < 0.0001.
