The number of branches within 10 μm of FGF-2 beads that landed on axons at various distances from the growth cone are shown. The distance from the bead to the growth cone was measured 3 hr after addition of the beads to the culture. The effect of FGF-2 beads on axon branching within 10 μm was assessed 3 d after bead application.
