  • Quantitation of retinal cell type survival. Nuclear counts: cells were visualized in transverse sections by Hoechst nuclear staining and identified by laminar position and nuclear morphology at 7 dpf. Significant cell loss is observed in the mikre oko PRCL and INL, whereas the GCL appears relatively normal. Total, Total number of retinal cells counted; GCL, number of cells in ganglion cell layer; INL, number of cells in inner nuclear layer; PRCL, number of cells in PRCL as scored by nuclear morphology. Photoreceptor-specific markers: photoreceptor cell survival was assessed in transverse sections with molecular markers specific to photoreceptor subtypes. Severe cell loss appears to be fairly evenly distributed among all photoreceptor types. Total, Total number of photoreceptor cells detected by immunostaining with Fret 43, anti-blue opsin, anti-rod opsin, and anti-UV opsin antibodies (see Materials and Methods). Average of five or more counts is provided for each data point.
