Cell survival, assessed as mean cell counts per well after 18 hr in culture (n = 4). Cell viability data represent the percentage of cells displaying dye uptake (100% uptake ≡ zero viability). No difference was observed in cell survival between LIF−/− or LIF+/+ mice in the presence or absence of LIF. At the end of the 18 hr culture period the vast majority of neurons also remained viable, as evidenced by the high level of Trypan blue exclusion in all culture conditions.
