  • Sagittal brain sections from mice of the indicated genotypes were stained for PrPSc, or with hematoxylin and eosin to reveal spongiosis. The relative amount of PrPSc deposition or spongiosis in the cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, brainstem, thalamus, and striatum was scored on a scale from 0 to 4, as follows: 0, none; 1, slight; 2, moderate; 3, severe; 4, very severe. The average score ± SEM for each brain region is given, with the number of mice analyzed for each group shown in parentheses.
