Furthermore, several agents have been shown to have hormetic-like biphasic dose responses for neurite outgrowth, including arachidonic acid (Konings et al., 1994), EPO (Bocker-Meffert et al., 2002), FGF (Williams et al., 1994a, 1994b), melanocortins (Joosten et al., 1995), NGF (Rosoff et al., 2004), VEGF (Sondell et al., 1999) and the immunosuppressive agents cyclosporin and staurosporine (Costantini and Isacson, 2000). Also well, low doses of the neurotoxic agents 6-OHDA (Kulich and Chu, 2001), mercuric chloride (HgCl) and methylmercury (Toimela and Tahti, 2004), and several pyrethroid mixtures (Kakko et al., 2004) have been shown to enhance markers of neuronal survival.
