However, the fish lacks the ability to elevate circulating levels of cortisol following exposure to a stressor (Barry et al., 1995; Stouthart et al., 1998; Feist and Schreck, 2001; Jentoft et al., 2002; Pepels and Balm, 2004; Alderman and Bernier, 2009; Alsop and Vijayan, 2009; Tsalafouta et al., 2014). Similar changes in egg, embryo, and whole-body concentrations of cortisol during embryogenesis and larval development have been documented in the acipenseriformes (sturgeons and paddlefish), and a hypo-responsive period during early development has been reported in white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus (Simontacchi et al., 2009), lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens (Zubair et al., 2012), and Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus (Falahatkar et al., 2014).

Cortisol levels, typically measured in blood samples, usually experience increase in response to acute stress: 10–100 fold in adult fish (Barton and Iwama, 1991) and 2–4 fold in larval salmonids (Pottinger and Mosuwe, 1994; Barry et al., 1995a, 1995b). The method of measuring whole-body levels of corticosteroids used in the present study is commonly used in small or larval fish (Barry et al., 1995a, 1995b; Pottinger and Mosuwe, 1994; Pottinger et al., 2016) but since corticosteroids concentrations are measured by this method in all body compartments their values are incomparable with those obtained from blood samples.
