Across vertebrates, the most robust and reliable brain sexual dimorphisms are found in the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus, consistent with the central role of the POA in regulating reproductive physiology and behavior (Bleier et al., 1982; Boyd et al., 1992; Breedlove, 1992; Grober et al., 1991; Moore et al., 2000; Viglietti-Panzica et al., 1986; Wade and Crews, 1991). For example, female rats have approximately twice the number of neurons co-expressing kisspeptin and dopamine in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus of the POA, a region which is known to control gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) cell function (Clarkson and Herbison, 2011; Gu and Simerly, 1997; Popolow et al., 1981; Simerly et al., 1985; Wiegand and Terasawa, 1982).

Vasotocin and mesotocin are the non-mammalian homologous peptides of vasopressin and oxytocin, they are involved in the central modulation of social behavior, such as pairing recognition, pair-bonding, social memory, sexual behavior, and parental care (Hollis et al., 2005; Lowry et al., 1997; Moore et al., 2000, 2005; Zimmermann-Peruzatto et al., 2015). Salamanders are often found in groups in their natural habitat, and some species exhibit parental care (Oneto et al., 2010).

The sexual dimorphic patterns in the distribution and organization of the nonapeptide neurons have been related to specific functions (Madeira et al., 1993; Maruska, 2009; Moore et al., 2000; Ohya and Hayashi, 2006; Ota et al., 1996). In some teleosts like midshipman (Porichthys notatus), salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) peacock blenny (Salaria pavo), rock-pool blenny (Parablennius parvicornis), African cichlid (Astatotilapia burtoni) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) that display alternate reproductive tactics, the size and number of the VT neurons varies among different reproductive morphs suggesting a role in regulating different reproductive phenotypes (Foran and Bass, 1998; Greenwood et al., 2008; Grober et al., 2002; Larson et al., 2006; Ota et al., 1999).
