The petroleum jelly ensures that the cannula module is free to move once the drivable optrode is cemented in place (Kralik et al., 2001). Next, the drivable optrode is inserted -4.0 mm from dura (∼500 μm above the gustatory cortex) and carefully cemented to the skull and anchor screws with dental acrylic (H00383, Coltene).

Typically, 1–4 units can be sorted online from a single wire with spikes, with an average typically below 1.5 per electrode (Kralik et al., 2001). Tetrodes have been reported to record in average 5.4 units per tetrode and a maximum of 9 units (Gray et al., 1995).

The chronic electrode assemblies were prepared in-house from 50 μm Teflon-coated steel microwires, paced 300 μm apart.
