The role of the parietal cortex in sensorimotor transformations and action coding

Overall, these connectivity patterns measured in humans using in vivo diffusion and resting-state imaging are largely similar to the patterns found in macaque monkeys using invasive tracer techniques (Mesulam et al., 1977; Seltzer and Pandya, 1984; Cavada and Goldman-Rakic, 1989a, b; Andersen et al., 1990; Neal et al., 1990a, b; Cavada, 2001; Gregoriou et al., 2006; Rozzi et al., 2006). Considering the fiber tract reconstruction on diffusion imaging data to be indirect, and thus prone to false positives and negatives, this overall similarity in the connectivity of the IPL between the species is striking.

It was particularly shown that macaque IPS ventral intraparietal area has connections to both sensorimotor as well as visual areas, thus providing a link between both networks, while other areas are mainly connected to either one of those domains, e.g. area LIP to extrastriate visual cortex (Seltzer and Pandya, 1980; Blatt et al., 1990; Baizer et al., 1991; Lewis and Van Essen, 2000b; Cavada, 2001). Connectivity of the SPL, medial SPL and precuneus in particular, mainly follows the course of the SLF I.

This schema is consistent with the large continuum of representations seen along the IPS (reviewed, e.g., in Burnod et al., 1999), and the fact that the anatomical distinctions between nominal cortical areas in this region are unclear and remain a matter of debate (Cavada, 2001; Lewis and Van Essen, 2000). It is also consistent with the fact that there is a great deal of overlap in the pattern of cortical areas that are active during any given task, for example, saccade and reach activity have been observed in overlapping cortical areas (Snyder et al., 1997, 2000b) and grasp-related activity can be observed in nominally reach-related areas (Fattori et al., 2009).

2007, Brain Research ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Finally, many of the dorsal stream areas, including DM, MT, MST and FSTd, have connections with the caudal portion of posterior parietal cortex in a region we have called ventral posterior parietal cortex (e.g., Kaas and Morel, 1993). This region appears to include cortex referred to as the posterior parietal reach region, the ventral intraparietal area and the lateral intraparietal area of macaque monkeys (see Cavada, 2001). It is not yet certain if these areas are well defined in New World monkeys.
