5-HT/GABA interaction in neurodevelopment and plasticity
2021, Progress in Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :LTP in the adult is a long-lasting increase in the synaptic efficacy elicited by reliable experimental protocols of short, high-frequency stimulation of presynaptic fibers, and it is a valid model of plasticity at the synaptic level as well as a relevant phenomenon to learning and memory (Bliss and Collingridge, 1993; Feldman, 2009, 2012). LTP in the adult is not confined in the hippocampal region, but it can be easily induced in different regions of the brain (Feldman, 2009, 2012), and in all these structures, GABA through the ionotropic GABAARs prevents or reduces LTP magnitude in vitro (Arima-Yoshida et al., 2011; Grover and Yan, 1999; Harauzov et al., 2010; Wigstrom and Gustafsson, 1983) and in vivo (Feldman, 2012; Hirai and Okada, 1993; Kaibara and Leung, 1993; Matsuyama et al., 2008). As far as 5-HT control of LTP is concerned, 5-HT modulates LTP in various synapses and through different receptors.
A critical survey on nitric oxide synthase expression and nitric oxide function in the retinotectal system
2007, Brain Research ReviewsCitation Excerpt :Although the reports about LTP have used different procedures and provided some conflicting results, they seem to display general features. In rat and guinea pig, the mammalian species used to study this issue, LTP in retinotectal synapses of the SC has been shown to be NMDA receptor-dependent, L-type Ca2+ channel-dependent and inhibited by the GABAergic inhibitory activity (Hirai and Okada, 1993; Hirai et al., 1993; Lo and Mize, 2002; Zhao et al., 2006). In the non-mammalian vertebrate's frog and fish, the LTP in the OT has also been described as NMDA receptor-dependent (Schmidt, 1990; Zhang et al., 1998; Ishikawa et al., 1999; Kinoshita et al., 2004).
