Activation of either GRs or κORs in the VTA itself is sufficient to block LTPGABA; bath application of dexamethasone or the κOR agonist U69593 (25) in vitro prevents SNAP-induced potentiation.

For example, a 3-week injection paradigm with a high dose of corticosterone had no effect on the radioligand binding capacities of hippocampal AMPAR, NMDAR and KAR [208], a finding which was recently updated by the observation that a 3-week addition of corticosterone to drinking water was effective at increasing the mRNA expression of the KA1 subunit in the DG if low, but not high, concentrations of the steroid were used [75]. Using a different protocol wherein corticosterone was delivered throughout 10 days by means of implanted pellets, Weiland et al. [210] focused on the consequences of such a regimen on the mRNA expression of NMDA receptor subunits, as assessed by in situ hybridisation.
