2016, Current Topics in Developmental BiologyCitation Excerpt :A similar graft of anterior hindbrain including the MHB from rat or mouse embryos into the chick diencephalon induces ectopic expression of EN1/2 (Martinez et al., 1991). Furthermore, inversion of the mesencephalic alar plate so that the anterior midbrain is now contacting the MHB results in respecification of the anterior midbrain to a posterior fate (Martinez & Alvarado-Mallart, 1990), and inversion of the mesencephalon together with the MHB results in duplication of posterior midbrain structures as a mirror image (Marin & Puelles, 1994). Grafting either quail or mouse MHB into the posterior hindbrain of a chick induces ectopic EN1/2 expression and differentiation of cerebellum (an anterior hindbrain structure) in the host (Martinez, Marin, Nieto, & Puelles, 1995).
EN2 in Prostate Cancer
2015, Advances in Clinical ChemistryCitation Excerpt :However, the subsequent downstream effects of En2 and its protein product have not been studied extensively. The EN2 protein has been identified in the developing brain of human fetuses, particularly in the dorsal cells of the midbrain/hindbrain border region, where it influences survival of mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons [180–183]. It is believed to guide axons to establish rostrocaudal polarity and continues to exert such action even after internalization by the axon [184,185].
Engrailed homeobox transcription factors as potential markers and targets in cancer
2013, FEBS LettersCitation Excerpt :In vertebrates, two En genes were discovered, En1 and En2, which differ slightly in their specific functions [45,46]. High levels of both En1 and En2 are expressed in the alar (dorsal) cells of the midbrain/hindbrain border region during brain development, and influence the survival of mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons [47–50]. Wilson et al. recently demonstrated that En1 and En2 are expressed in many cell types in the cerebellum, with expression still evident at postnatal day 21 [51].
Chapter 2 Quail-Chick Transplantations
2008, Methods in Cell BiologyCitation Excerpt :The neural epithelium is then separated from the cephalic mesenchyme, cut out transversally (and longitudinally) at the chosen levels, and finally separated from the notochord if necessary. Heterotopic grafts can be made to study specific problems (Grapin‐Botton et al., 1995; Le Douarin, 1993; Martinez and Alvarado‐Mallart, 1990; Martinez et al., 1991; Nakamura, 1990, and references therein). In order to study the extent of the territory that yields the cerebellar cortex, very refined experiments have been performed (Hallonet and Le Douarin, 1993).
