Assessment of anoxia tolerance and photoperiod dependence of GABAergic polarity in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis
2017, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology -Part A : Molecular and Integrative PhysiologyCitation Excerpt :The increase in extracellular [GABA] is suggested to play a critical role in anoxia-tolerance of the western painted turtle, ultimately leading to electrical suppression through the activation of a shunting inhibition mechanism (Pamenter et al., 2011). Several studies, however, have demonstrated that GABA exerts both excitatory and inhibitory effects in the nervous system of a variety of gastropods (Yarowsky and Carpenter, 1978; Yongsiri et al., 1988; Kim and Takeuchi, 1990; Alkon et al., 1992; Ito et al., 1994; Zhang et al., 1997). The postsynaptic effects of GABA are primarily mediated through the GABAA receptor, which facilitates the flux of Cl− ions down the electrochemical gradient.
