Abstract

  • 1.

    1. A modified and improved method is described for the assay in tissue culture, of Nerve Growth Factor (abbreviated NGF).

  • 2.

    2. A series of graded doses of NGF stimulated the outgrowth of nerve fibres from chick embryo ganglia isolated and cultured in a semi-solid medium. The outgrowths of nerve fibres occurred with maximum intensity in the presence of an optimum concentration of the factor.

  • 3.

    3. A straightforward statistical procedure enabled estimates of the optimum concentration of factor required for maximum fibre growth to be calculated in each test.

  • 4.

    4. The reproducibility of results was examined and estimates were obtained of the error of the method.

  • 5.

    5. Application of the assay to the standardisation of the antiserum specific to NGF is discussed n terms of a common unit.
