Domestic chicks express more REM sleep episodes after the imprinting (Solodkin, Cardona, & Corsi-Cabrera, 1985). Sleep in birds as in mammals influences the process of memory stabilization or consolidation (Bolhuis & Moorman, 2015; Brawn & Margoliash, 2014; Walker & Stickgold, 2004), as demonstrated by several studies carried out not only in songbirds but also in nonsongbird species.

In starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), a songbird species, sleep has been reported to provide protection against interference impairment (Brawn et al., 2013).
