Furthermore, the acquisition performance of mice treated with MK801 was chronically impaired on a spatial learning task, because MK801 caused histopathological changes in the RSC of the mouse brain (Brosnan-Watters et al., 1996; Wozniak et al., 1996). These results suggest that the degeneration of the IL-18R-ir neurons in the RSC may cause the abnormal behavior of the IL-18 KO mouse.

However, MK-801 is known to affect locomotor activity (e.g. [37,38]), so the effect on exploratory activity in our study could partly be explained by a possible interaction between MK-801 and PQ-10. Of note, since the d2 index is a relative measure of discrimination that corrects for exploration activity, these changes in exploration will not affect the object recognition index.
