Sexual and asexual development: two distinct programs producing the same tunicate
2021, Cell ReportsCitation Excerpt :The germline is made up of a highly protected and strictly regulated group of cells that transmit genetic information to the next generation. In vertebrates, the germline originates as a very small founding population, segregated from somatic cells early in development (Anderson et al., 1999; Dixon, 1994; Soriano and Jaenisch, 1986; Ueno et al., 2009; Weismann, 1892). B. schlosseri is hermaphroditic and gonads are detectable only after several blastogenic cycles (Kawamura et al., 2011).

2016, Current Topics in Developmental BiologyCitation Excerpt :Nonetheless, there is little doubt that this approach has been essential for describing various aspects of later stages of development. For example, it has enabled significant discoveries in both chick and mouse, such as the separation of somatic and germ line fates (e.g., Soriano & Jaenisch, 1986), the origin of the germ layers (e.g., Carey, Linney, & Pedersen, 1995), the origin of cardiac cell types (e.g., Mikawa & Fischman, 1992), and the heterogeneity of late neural clones (e.g., Walsh & Cepko, 1992). Lineage analyses and fate maps have enabled developmental biologists to elucidate the general principles that control embryonic development.
