Likewise, the MDD ‘morning worse’ diurnal trend in affect has traditionally been thought to be due to a dysregulation of circardian rhythms in biological processes, such as HPA axis activity and melatonin secretion (Hall et al., 1964; Moffot et al., 1994). More recent research has found that morning lows in affect are linked with lower than average cortisol levels in the hours after waking (Daly et al., 2011).
