Other studies have not found differences in GABAB receptor binding in the cortex or hippocampus of depressed suicide victims (75,76). Recently, patients with temporal lobe epilepsy with comorbid depression and/or anxiety were shown to have increased GABAB receptor expression, as determined by autoradiography with the antagonist [3H]CGP54626, but lower baclofen-induced G-protein coupling, assessed using [35S]guanosine 5′-(3-O-thio) triphosphate ([35S]GTPγS) autoradiography, the latter correlating with seizure frequency (77).

The exact mechanism(s) by which rTMS exerts its effects in MDD remains unclear, but it may be beneficial to optimise parameters for the reduction of cortical inhibition in DLPFC, and further explore these findings in DLPFC using combined TMS and electroencephalography [49,50].
