To the best of our knowledge, there are no recent available data regarding sleep and the distribution of its different phases in pups (Daszuta et al., 1983) and this study represents the first successful attempt to record and quantify sleep stages in very young pups using telemetry procedure. Hence, we compared our data with the sleep data obtained in adult mice by the same technique.

For example, C57BL6 mice tend to exhibit greater amounts of SWS than do BALB/c mice, in particular during the light phase (Daszuta et al., 1983; Franken et al., 1999; Friedmann, 1974; Roussel et al., 1984). Clear differences are also observed for the EEG delta-power over 24-h, or following SD of various durations performed during the light phase (Franken et al., 1998, 1999, 2001; Huber et al., 2000).

It has been known for many years that different genetic backgrounds may influence the expression of complex behavior of mice, including sleep (Friedmann, 1974; Valatx and Bugat, 1974; Daszuta et al., 1983; Roussel et al., 1984; Tafti et al., 1997; Toth and Williams, 1999; Huber et al., 2000). However, data from our present study suggest that the ambient temperature at which mice are housed may also be a critical determinant of precise alterations in sleep induced by IL-1β.
