Other groups observed a similar staining pattern of FN in the P4 mouse cochlea (Woolf et al., 1992; Cosgrove and Rodgers, 1997), although a more widely distributed pattern was detected. In contrast to the glycoproteins TN-C and FN and as described for different species before, prominent LN immunoreactivity was restricted mainly to the BM as well as SGNs and their neurites (Takahashi and Hokunan, 1992; Cosgrove and Rodgers, 1997; Weinberger et al., 1999; Rodgers et al., 2001; Tsuprun and Santi, 2001).

An abundant expression of fibronectin surrounding most cochlear tissues is noted in newborn rodents, with a reduced expression in all regions except the basilar membrane noted by 14 days after birth (Woolf et al., 1992). Cosgrove and Rodgers (1997) examined the expression patterns of major basement membrane‐associated proteins (laminin‐1, entactin, and HSPG) as a function of postnatal cochlear development.
